SAFFRON: Hero Ingredient

This medicinal flower has been used orally and topically from ancient times to get glowing and radiating skin. Saffron is the dried stigmas of a flower scientifically identified as Crocus sativusl This perennial stemless herb is widely cultivated in Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.
These flowers are handpicked, dried, and packaged locally, mostly by women. Saffron is a rare and expensive ingredient due to this involved complexity of harvesting, climate conditions, and low yield. To produce 1 gram of Saffron, more than 150 flowers are needed.
Saffron not only provides a means of living but also empowers women involved in cultivation and harvesting. With Saffr’n skin care products, we want to bring high-quality yet affordable skin care products made from natural Saffron while preserving all its benefits.

Benefits of using saffron as a hero ingredient:-

  • Protects Against UV Radiation
The first skincare goal in anyone’s skin care routine should be protection against ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Protection from UV radiation can protect skin from a range of problems and diseases. UV radiation promotes the production of free radicals that damage skin cells and accelerate skin aging. Crocin, the active compound in saffron, has potent antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are molecules that neutralize free radicals. Crocin also protects against ultraviolet A (UVA) rays and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which are responsible for early skin aging. Aromatic and flavonoid compounds kaempherol, quercetin, Safranal present in Saffron, also help in protection from UV radiation.
  • Fights Inflammation
Inflammation, caused by oxidative stress, can cause a lot of skin issues. The antioxidant properties of crocin can help fight this oxidative stress and inflammation. Crocin suppresses the expression of various inflammatory proteins. Lycopene, a carotenoid, present in Saffron, also helps in repairing skin damage caused by free radicals. These anti-inflammatory properties also help in treating acne.
  • Supports Wound Healing
Proper wound healing lowers the risk of developing skin complications, including skin infections and scarring. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of saffron help in increasing the growth of skin cells, and thus closing wounds. Potassium present in Saffron helps with cell formation and repair.
  • Reduces Hyperpigmentation
Hyperpigmentation is the condition when parts of skin become darker than the surrounding skin. It’s caused by excess pigment, or excess melanin production. Hyperpigmentation can develop due to scarring, sun exposure. Crocin suppresses the tyrosinase, an enzyme that’s essential for melanin production. Zeaxanthin present in Saffron also helps in treating dark skin spots.
  • Slows Skin Aging
Zeaxanthin, present in Saffron, helps in fighting wrinkles, maintaining skin elasticity, and reducing blemishes.
